Overcoming the initial challenges
When Darrell McMillon joined DSU in 2020 as vice president and CIO, he supported significant challenges. The current technological infrastructure was an outdated, suppressing potential and progress. McMillon, along with Russell Weaver, the Executive Director of Network Services, called on the complete overwork of the DSU technology landscape to drive the university for the future.
Strategic Partnership with Cisco
DSU realized the critical need for modernization and in 2017 built a strong partnership with Cisco after the network outages. Together they embarked on an ambitious project to rework the IT university infrastructure. The result was the most modern network with 300 new switches, 1500 advanced wireless access points and robust safety appliances. This transformation not only enriched campuses, but placed DSU as a leader of technological innovation.
Increasing cyber security
At a time when cyber threats and a national mandate develop, in which all institutions must go through the NIST evaluation (National Standards and Technology Institute) in order to continue receiving government financing, DSU is too proactive. In cooperation with the Cisco Community Engable team, DSU renews the donation of $ 3.37 million from Cisco. This gift allowed the university to revolutionize its network security approach. Transforming physical firewall into logical virtual ones that DSU has achieved unrivaled protection for its networks. As McMillon stressed: “Our infrastructure is reliable, scalable and carefree and supports more campuses throughout the state.” DSU is not just standard cyber security; Sets the molding higher.

One recent alray graduate ensured the role of full -time network support and introduced the tangible advantages of these initiatives.
